CHACO CANYON
Located on road 57 off hiway 550, northwest of Cuba, this is the prem
ier Anasazi site in the southwest. Thought to have been the religious and governmental center of the Anasazi world. It is a day trip from Cuba and a must see!
SAN PEDRO PARKS WILDERNESS
Located off hiway 126 on Forest Service road 70. Over 41,000 acres of high mountain wilderness. Great hiking in gently rolling topography averaging 10,000 feet above sea level. The Parks are characterized by large grassy and wet meadows, interrupted by dense stands of spruce and conifers.
CABEZON PEAK
Cabezon means "Big Head" in Spanish, but a lot of people say it reminds them of a sombrero. Located t
o the southeast of Cuba off hiway 550 on county road 279 through San Luis. Below the peak was one of the oldest Spanish Settlements on the Rio Puerco River. The abandoned town of Cabezon was once a Spanish Presidio, a stage stop coming from Albuquerque and a cavalry regiment was stationed there in the 1800's.
This is an area of volcanic plugs, of which Cabezon Peak is the most predominant. It rises 2,000 off the valley floor and there is a climbing route on the south side that can be ascended by people in good shape and not afraid of climbing a few steep rock pitches.

NOGALES CLIFF HOUSE
Very difficult to find, you need to find a local guide, but worth the trip. Probably the best preserved site in the area of the Gallina culture, and one of the few Cliff Houses they built.
CUBA TO JEMEZ SPRINGS
A wonderful summer drive is State Highway 126 from Cuba to Jemez Springs. It is a goo
d dirt road most of the way, except after heavy rains. The road crosses several fishing streams and has several Forest Service campgrounds. This is a pleasant, scenic drive back to Albuquerque. Without stopping, it takes about an hour to get to Jemez Springs, then another hour or so to Albuquerque. Keep an eye out for wildlife!
